Halberg Rassy Misril II
Hello there good people,
I just bought my first boat and it is demasted. The previous owner told me that before demasting the cables inside the must were cut from the mast for sabotaging reason.
Anyway, The boat needs a lot of work from the inside. A refurbishing project to be faire. So I thought I should prioritise and start with fixing the mast issue before setting it up since the rest can wait but this is a necessity. The hull is in good condition the only thing neede is the mast and the inside.
My questions is, for those who have the experience, who are generous and do not mind to share their experience, is this easy for an unexperienced man like me or this is not an easy job to do?
Much appreciated.

Maher!
I don´t follow the following sentence: The previous owner told me that before demasting the cables inside the must were cut from the mast for sabotaging reason.!
Do you mean that the previous owner cut them off? Or that he dismantled them from cables coming up from inside the boat? Or that some evilminded person simply cut them off?? In that case where? On top of the mast?
When demasting you always will have to separate the cables coming out from the bottom side of the mast from the cables that come up from inside the boat; In your case the mast is standing on the deck, so some kind of disconnecting must take place. A whole other enterprise would be installing new cables, pulling them through the mast etc etc. Tricky but can be done!
Then: most of us were unexperienced at the start and most of us had to think a lot before trying to fix things. So your boat needs a lot of caring inside. Exactly what? Mahogany surfaces in need of polish, lacquer?? Or what?? Engine? Diesel? Electric system?

Hi Seymore.
Many thanks for taking the time to reply to me.
Yes, as you said an evil-minded person cut all the cables. Why, I do not know! That's what the previous owner told me before I take over. I do not know how but let us consider the cables are missing completely from the mast.
What I came to understand from you that there are 2 sets of cables, those that are coming up from the boat upwards and those downwards. Right?!
Well, I started yesterday by visiting Hornbach to inquire about marine type cables, but unfortunately they do not have! However, they do have cables that are used for outdoors spotlights and tolerates weather but when the guy asked me about the power capacity I got totally silenced. How many ampere and about the voltage etc... things I couldn't answer because I simply do not know.
The boat needs a great deal of caring. The Mahogany is okay. There is no leakage to the inside but condensation, yes. For that I bought dehumidifier today and put them inside to help reduce humidity. Later on when I get my own boat place I will start the heater to keep it warm from the inside.
Furthermore, the inside needs a great deal of refurbishing, the mattresses needs to be replaced, new painting, the lining in the v-berth needs to be ripped off completely and replaced. The inboard motor was removed long ago and replaced by an outboard Suzuki 5Hk (serviced in 2024).
Now, since I am really in need for a lot of guidance, I started by emptying the boat. I took all the sails, mattresses and all the accessories out to a dry storage. The plan is to empty everything beforehand to be able to clean and prepare for the painting. What type of painting is it best for that?!
I hope that is not too much to process

Re: Halberg Rassy Misril II
A new world to discover!
As your are a complete beginner I think that you should spend some time reading books, journals etc etc ; you will get a lot of answers to questions you didn´t know that you had! Also, there´s a journal in Sweden, Praktiskt båtägande which might have articles that may help.
Hornbach is not the place to visit when it comes to boating; Instead you should direct your feet to i.e Hjertmans or Sea Sea etc etc.Often knowledgeable sellers may inform you when it comes to painting, cables etc etc. Cables usable for boating should be of a certain kind; there´s a company, Skyllermark, nowadays to be found at "Sutars" selling products usable at sea. https://sutars.com/skyllermarks-produkter/
Mostly we are talking about Direct Current (DC) 12 volts - far from the AlternatingDCurrent (AC) at 230 volts in our houses, flats etc etc.
Well, not two sets of cables; instead let´s say that you have a battery in the boat. And a lantern at the top of the mast! In order to get the lantern to glow you will have to install a cable between the battery (or an electrical panel) and the lanterna. So the cable must, at some point enter the mast, through the hull. From the lantern and inside the mast a cable must be installed, down to the far end of the mast. But as the mast is to become taken away you will have to connect the cable from the mast to the cable from the battery. In some way!
As your boat already has a pre existing electrical system you should use this. I cannot tell you how!!
That´s one of the highlights of boating - a lot of thinking is required!! And fixing!
Dehumidifying is a good thing!
So get going! And good luck!

Dear Seymore.
Many thanks for you comprehensive reply and the tips you included. You have no idea how helpful you were.
I visited Hjertmans.se already and made a list and added few of the intended to buy items. Now, the main thing I will focus on is the electricity system, stepping the mast as well as a major inside and outside cleaning. Painting is coming afterwards when the weather permits. However, I will start with stripping the old paint off now.
Another question if I may, regarding the v-birth, do you recommend isolating or a painting is kind of sufficient?
Thank you for taking the time to interact with my inquiries.
Have a great weekend.

Re: Halberg Rassy Misril II
I don´t understand v-berth! Do you refer to a bunk? Place to sit/sleep on or what?
If bunk - in general bunks are just lacquered. I have used, with very good results, a lacquer designed for floors (Nordsjö parkettlack, halvblank
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/shop ... U9q3pgssiA
Of course - the bunk surface might need some polishing - to remove old paint/lacquer - but don´t over do!
In order to prevent damp forming under the "mattresses" I used door mats (not plastic ones), 3 of them on each bunk. So no islolation.
If this was your question!

Hi there
Again, thank you for your engaging responses.
Please note that the v-berth is the front pointed side of the boat, it is also called forepeak, yes, it is the sleeping area!
The mahogany is in good shape as well as the floor, they do not need that much of work, including the bunks. If I can attach some pictures, I would have done it so you would have an idea about the work I will be doing.
The most urgent work is the mast stepping, inside painting and cleaning the inside and the outside areas. Might the cockpit be in need of a new gelcoat painting. It needs, at first, a good clean with a water pressure first so we know what needs to be done.
I will visit Norsjö tomorrow and see if they have a paint remover. I will ask them they might know something
I went to Hjertmans today and the paint remover they have, they are not sure if it will remove the paint inside of my boat or not.

Re: Halberg Rassy Misril II
I see!
But where is the paint that you want to remove? From the pictures of the interior I cannot find any surfaces that are painted. The "walls" (hull sides) seems to be covered with interior foam mats. After all this boat is made by a high quality manufacturer.
If the cockpit has teak parts - beware of high pressure water! Much better to use teak cleaners etec etc. ( https://www.pbo.co.uk/gear/10-teak-clea ... sted-27992 )
Mattresses can be replaced: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MrGdMR9_X4
So - use the net to find solutions! Practical boatowner is in english, maybe more easy to read??? ( https://www.pbo.co.uk/ )
And make a list, prioritize!!! What seems to be absolutely necessary as of now? What can be done with the boat in the water? And don´t forget - fixing a boat might sometimes amount to a sinkhole gobbling up whatever are your financial resources!!

Re: Halberg Rassy Misril II
Hey there.
I hope you are having a great weekend.
The paint is in the forepeak above the lining. Today to the boat and removed the lining and the other foam (sponge) layer that was moldy. I found a little leakage but I could not find where exactly is it coming from. Sure from the deck but could not pinpoint
. It will be found I am sure.
You are right, fixing a boat is a sinkhole. I am very cautious when it comes to the budget. I do not want to be carried out.
What I am planning on doing, myself, is as follows:
1- Stepping the mast (rewired).
2- Paint the inside with white.
3- Change the the hatch rubber.
4- Give it a supper supper great clean.
5- Change all the mattresses.
6- Have fun with the family and friends.
The video links you included were supper helpful. I have already bought a piece of fabric from the second hand to use it for the mattresses. I took the measurements yesterday and I will do them accordingly little by little.
I would like to thank you again for all the tips you are sharing. That shows your generous personality and love for sharing. Much appreciated
